Don’t get trapped — learn to tell real breakouts from false ones
There’s nothing worse than seeing price break out of a range or level… only to slam back in and stop you out.
Fakeouts (or false breakouts) are common traps — but with the right tools and mindset, you can avoid most of them.
📉 What’s the Difference Between a Breakout and Fakeout?
A breakout occurs when price moves above resistance or below support with momentum and follow-through.
A fakeout is when price briefly pushes beyond a key level — only to reverse and trap traders who entered too early.
Understanding the intent behind the move — not just the candles — is what separates professionals from retail traders.
🔍 Signs of a Real Breakout
- Strong volume confirming the move
- A clean break and close outside the level
- Retest of structure holding as support or resistance
- Alignment with trend direction or higher-timeframe bias
- Clear market structure shift (not just a wick through the level)
🚨 Signs of a Fakeout
- Weak or declining volume on the breakout
- No candle body closes beyond the level
- Quick rejection — especially during news or illiquid times
- Price immediately returns to the range or key level
- Lack of confluence from other technical indicators
💡 Smart Ways to Filter Fakeouts
- Wait for the close of the breakout candle before entering
- Use multi-timeframe confluence — does the breakout align on the 1H, 4H, and daily?
- Look for liquidity grabs — price may sweep highs/lows before reversing
- Trade the retest, not the breakout itself (safer entry)
- Add confirmation from tools like RSI divergence, volume spikes, or your custom indicator
🧠 Mindset: Avoiding the FOMO Trap
Most fakeouts happen because traders chase price. If you’re reacting instead of planning, you’re likely to get burned.
Discipline beats speed.
Let the breakout prove itself. If you miss it, there’s always another setup.
✅ TL;DR
- Real breakouts show conviction: strong volume, clean structure, and confirmation
- Fakeouts are traps: weak momentum, wicky breakouts, no follow-through
- Wait for confirmation and favor retests to avoid getting stopped out
