Why session timing matters
Liquidity and volatility are not spread evenly through the day. Spreads are typically tightest and moves largest when major centers overlap and when scheduled data is released — 8:30 a.m. ET for most US economic reports, 10:00 a.m. ET for ISM surveys, and 2:00 p.m. ET for FOMC decisions.
Quiet periods, such as the gap between the New York close and the Tokyo open, often see thinner liquidity and wider spreads.
Market hours FAQ
What markets trade during the London session?
The London session (roughly 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. UK time) is the busiest period for spot FX, especially EUR, GBP and CHF pairs, and for precious metals, which are priced in the London OTC market. European stock exchanges such as the LSE and Xetra are open, and US index futures trade on CME Globex during these hours.
When is the London–New York overlap?
When both sessions are open — usually from about 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. New York time. Because the US and UK change clocks on different dates in spring and autumn, the overlap shifts by an hour for a few weeks each year. The live table above accounts for this automatically.
Are forex market hours the same as the sessions shown here?
Spot FX trades continuously from Sunday 5:00 p.m. to Friday 5:00 p.m. New York time. The Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York 'sessions' are conventions describing when each financial center is active, not formal opening and closing times.
Do these hours account for holidays?
No. Exchange holidays and early closes are not included. Check the relevant exchange's holiday calendar before trading.
