About stock indexes
Stock indexes summarize the performance of a group of companies. The four major US benchmarks differ in what they hold and how they weight it: the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 are market-cap weighted, the Nasdaq-100 uses a modified cap weighting, and the Dow is price-weighted.
Most index trading happens in derivatives. CME equity index futures trade almost around the clock from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, so they react to overnight news and economic releases before the 9:30 a.m. ET cash open.
