About the Nat Gas

The NYMEX Henry Hub natural gas contract (NG) is the benchmark for US gas prices, with delivery at the Henry Hub pipeline interchange in Louisiana.

Natural gas demand is highly seasonal — heating in winter, power generation for cooling in summer — so weather forecasts can move prices more than macroeconomic data.

Growing US LNG exports have tied domestic prices more closely to global gas markets than in the past.

What moves Nat Gas

Common drivers. None of them determine price on their own.

Weather
Heating and cooling demand forecasts are the dominant short-term driver.
Storage
Weekly injections and withdrawals versus expectations and the five-year average can trigger large moves.
Production and LNG
Output trends and the operating status of LNG export terminals shift the supply/demand balance.

Nat Gas FAQ

When is the natural gas storage report released?

The EIA Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report is typically released on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. ET, shifting around federal holidays.

Why is natural gas so volatile?

Demand swings with the weather, storage capacity is finite, and supply cannot adjust quickly. Together these produce larger price swings than most other major commodities.
