What PPI measures
The Producer Price Index measures the average change over time in selling prices received by domestic producers. The headline 'final demand' index covers goods, services and construction sold to final users.
Why traders watch it
PPI can signal cost pressures before they reach consumers, and several PPI components (such as airfares, portfolio management and medical services) feed directly into economists' estimates of the PCE price index.
What to look at in the release
| Final demand | Headline index |
| Ex food and energy | Core measure |
| PCE-relevant components | Airline passenger services, health care, portfolio management |
How markets tend to interpret it
Relative to consensus expectations — not the absolute level.
Stronger / hotter than expected
Firm producer prices can raise concern about pipeline inflation and lift PCE forecasts.
Weaker / cooler than expected
Soft producer prices can ease those concerns.
Context matters. PPI's market impact is usually smaller than CPI's, and its translation to consumer prices is indirect and variable.

Markets that watch PPI
Each note explains the channel for that market; reactions are tendencies, not rules.
| Market | Why it can matter |
|---|---|
| US 2Y | Several PPI components — airfares, health care, portfolio management fees — feed directly into core PCE, so forecasters revise their PCE estimates after PPI. That can move the 2-year even when headline PPI is in line. |
PPI FAQ
Does PPI lead CPI?
Sometimes. Higher producer costs can be passed to consumers, but the timing and degree vary by industry and by economic conditions.
